Dear friends
This is the first number of ELASA's newspaper. We are going to explain how it is done, and why. As you know, in Budapest there was a proposal from Castillo de Batres (Spain) to set an information center. If they could not do it we would wait for another proposal. If no other country wanted to do the information center all the information would go to Rapperswil (Switzerland) until the next meeting.
The School: Castillo de Batres supported the students but they did not have enough people to work in it. We talked about it and Portugal offered help. We met in the 17th of June in Madrid, and everything was going on so well that we are going to work together. The information center will be in Madrid (address below) and we will hold meetings every two months more or less. These meetings will be held in Madrid and in Lisbon, alternating between the two cities. In every meeting we will produce a number of ELASA's newspaper, it will be printed in Portugal and sent to all the countries. So the functions of the informations center will be:
Receiving information
Compiling all the information
This will be done using a computer. Now we are working between Portugal and Spain, but we would like to have the same program all over Europe. That way the information would be more easily available. So please send us any suggestions that you have for the program.
Answering when someone asks for information
Although the information center is not supposed to answer private matters, it can tell where to search for concrete information (for example from the representatives).
Editing ELASA's newspaper
The newspaper is going to be printed on a regular basis. We thought of maybe every two or three months. We have lots of ideas about it, we will see what is better to work with. This issue of ELASA's newspaper (number zero) is going to be printed in Portugal.
FUNDING: because this year it won't be very expensive to maintain the information center the Spanish and the Portuguese associations will provide the money.
We hope that the information center will be working well. Please send us all the information that you can find. The address is:
Castillo de Batres
Calle Valenzuela 8
28014 Madrid
SPAIN
Telephone number: 521 88 71
We don't have a fax, this will be discussed later, we can send faxes through the post office.

On the 26th and 27th of April two students from ELASA, Tom Vervoort and Quirijm Verhoog, went to the EFLA meeting in Brussels. They attended the meeting of the "Education Committee" as observers: This meeting was attended by:
The education committee tried to work on the similarities with the ELEE. In order to establish a better cooperation in perspective of their common activities. In practice for ELFLA this means work, figuring out a minimum basic package, whose standards will have to be met by the different studies in the different countries. There was also a "practice committee".
The 27th of April was the day for a general assembly, the students made a speech to explain what had happened in the last meeting of ELASA, and asked some questions.
The first question was whether EFLA is interested in giving ELASA some financial support. Our greatest expenses, as you know, will arise in making the information center work.
On the whole, there was a general positive attitude. The objective of EFLA was to support us themselves. They did however make clear that it was essential to pass on concise and detailed information. Also the remark was made that we shared common goals concerning the information. So, we decided to continue the discussion on a later date.
The second question was about the co-opted members of the education committee of the EFLA (what is it all about, and how long he/ she will be representative of ELASA in EFLA). It was said that the ELASA representative should remain the same for a considerable time. The representative will attend the next meeting of the education committee (25-26 October 1992 - Genova, Italy) as a full member. It is therefore imperative that we decide as soon as possible who is going to be, so we can communicate to EFLA.
The last question was posed to Mike Downing. He was asked whether it would be possible for us to get the information he collected about the studies in the European countries. Mike Downing has not yet completely collected all the information necessary. It will be sent to us later.
The main conclusion was that we needed a meeting. They suggested that the 13th and 14th of July 1991, in Versailles. In this meeting will be elected the ELASA representative in EFLA. We will also be able to talk about the connections with IFLA, and the information center. We are open to other suggestions concerning the date and subjects. As the Belgians are the most involved, they will deal with the correspondance concerning this meeting.

Independently from what we will decide to do about working abroad, we insist that you get in touch with the IAAS represntative at your country/ school.
The main idea is first, to give students good contacts with landscape architecture offices, construction companies or nurseries, and help them find jobs there. So, next year the IAAS exchange program will be able to offer a lot of places for landscape architecture students. After this is done, we must inform people that there are places available for l. arch. students. The students application for the program will take place before the christmas holidays. IAAS representatives will all meet after this process to exchange and gather places available with the candidates.
We have already given some landscape architects contacts to the portuguese IAAS committee, and we hope that next year IAAS is able to offer some places for landscape architecture training in Portugal. We would also like to offer our students some places in your country next year... Shall we try?

As you may know, Tempus applications for 1992 ended in March 15, 1991. Applications for 1993 must be delivered until november 1991!
We know this program is undergoing an important restructuring; and as neither we nor Spain made the necessary approach to direct responsables for the program in our countries (we didn't manage to advance much in Madrid).
Anyway, we met Roger and we received some very good suggestions. We will tell you something more substantial on our next issue of ELASA's newspaper.

This Forum is open to all students and teachers of European Schools that have courses in the field of Landscape Architecture, Environmental Planning, Urban Design and related fields.
The first International Forum was held in Venice, January 3-5 1991. A techer and two or three students from each school were officially invited to take part in the display and workshop, ie: cultural exchange and publication.
We have contacted Professor G. Abrami and we received a list of events for 1992, with a word of advice:
Please ask for more information on each event at least three months in advance. Places are very limited!
We will try to publish on ELASA's newspaper more details on each event, but if you are interested write directly to:
Journal I.F.
Studion Ecopiano
Via Magnasco, 1

Fax: 0039-49-600450
The International Forum on Landscape Architecture also has published issue zero of "JOURNAL I.F.". If you want to subscribe fill the order form that we published in the last page of ELASA's newspaper.

The Landscape was the title for the cinema show APEAS organized in April 1991. This had two subjects:
We managed to find some good films for the second subject, but didn't get much material directly concerned with specific landscape architecture subjects.
Request: if you have, or can find, any interesting material on that subject (in video), please get in touch with us so we can arrange to get it for our next show.
Please send all information to: Ap. 377, 7004 vora Codex
