THE NEWSLETTER

Two weeks ago the deadline to send us articles and news passed over. There weren't many articles to be printed and we expected more stuff. Now some information is just arriving and we can start another part of the Newsletter. It will be the last edition from the ELASA Information-Center in Rapperswil.

The transfer of the Information-Center to France isn't done yet. In Rapperswil we decided to discuss the change of the Information-Center in Marmaris. There are further interests from other countries.

According to this smaller edition, Newsy gets a new friend called Shorty. He's a good friend of the Newsletter.

REPORT OF THE EDUCATION GROUP FOR 1992/1993

Representatives

EFLA:
Nicole Bolomey, Switzerland
Simon Lisney, UK (contact person)

RCE (IFLA):
as above

IFLA:
Lars Kald, Sweden
Laila Løkken, Norway

ECLAS:
George Coqui, Germany
Christophe Hendricks, Belgium

Reserve: Pal Bardos, Hungary

Aims

The ELASA Education Group consits of the elected persons of ELASA who represent the Association within various professional Landscape Architectural organisations in Europe. The Representatives aim to ensure that the views of students are considered by these organisations and that the efforts of all parties, towards the encouragement of Landscape Architecture, is coordinated.

Reports

Full reports from the EFLA General Assembly, Education Committee and RCE appeared in the ELASA Newsletter produced in June 1992. A full report from the IFLA World congress and international Student Jamboree, Seoul, Korea, was included in the November 1992 Newsletter. Copies of which are attached for your information.

The current situation in each organisation is as follows:

EFLA

There have been some problems with funding from EFLA, following a successful meeting in Wasenaar, Holland, May 1992. This has arisen from confusion as to the status of ELASA within EFLA regulations. To solve this the reps are currently discussing the matter and will draw up a formal Proposal to be presented to the next EFLA General Assembly. A draft will be presented to the ELASA reps meeting in Marmaris for approval.

The main points of the proposal will be:

  1. To recognize ELASA as the official representative body in Europe for LA students.
  2. To allow ELASA reps to attend both the Education Committee and General Assembly as Observer members
  3. Provide financial support for one rep, whilst allowing two reps to attend.

RCE (IFLA)

The reps are again in contact with the RCE, who are basically a regional branch of IFLA. A letter has been sent inviting comments on the opportunities of ELASA becoming officially recognized. Following the meeting last year, a reference to ELASA was incorporated into the RCE Action Plan. Some form of proposal similar to the one prepared for ELASA will be drafted.

IFLA

Following the successful trip to the World Congress, Seoul 1992, the group hope to consolidate the recognition of ELASA and the generous funding of two reps. The relationship between IFLA, ELASA and the proposed IALAS international student organisation needs to be discussed and a future strategy agreed. Presently, ELASA has two reps who attended the Congress as Observer members with no voting rights.

ECLAS

Unfortunately, ELASA was not represented at the ECLAS meeting in Vienna 1992. This was mainly due to a lack of funding, a problem that will need to be resolved for the future. It is hoped that there will be representation at the meeting in 1993 so that ELASA has a voice in the educational debates held.

Turkiye 1993

The group will meet before or during the Reps meeting to discuss the previous years experiences, which have been tough but rewarding for all.

There will be discussion on a possible Interim meeting so that our efforts could be better debated. Also to set a range of realistic targets for the next year and prepare information for any new reps elected at the reps meeting. It is our intention to achieve official recognition of ELASA in EFLA, RCE and IFLA before the next Conference in 1994, wherever it may be!

Note:

EFLA: European Foundation of Landscape Architecture
RCE (IFLA): Regional Council of Europe (IFLA)
IFLA: International Federation of Landscape Architects
ECLAS: European Conference fo Landscape Architecture Schools

WORKSHOP IN HUNGARY

Dear friends

In Hungary twice a year (in autumn and spring) we've got a five days trip around the country. We visit historical, cultural and natural places of interest and look around with a landscape of architectural views.

This spring (from the 17th of May to the 21st) you've got the chance to join us and have a one week adventure in Hungary. The trip will be by bus, lodgings will be provided in different places like hotels, motels and campings depending on where the trip takes us. Everybody has to take care for his meals (in supermarkets or sometimes in restaurants). In the evening we'll have time for resting.........

You wouldn't have to pay for the bus, the only expenses are to come to Hungary (and return), to buy your food and for the accomodation (about 300 HF / it takes about 3 $ / per night). All along the trip one of us will translate the programmes. We have translators for English, German, French,....

The number of participants is limited, so contact us as soon as possible!

We look forward to see you in HUNGARY!!!

With best regards,
Hajni from Hungary

GOING ABROAD

As we last year talked over during the representatives meeting, I'd like to recollect a certain matter. We talked about gathering adresses to go abroad.

People who where willing to make someone into their home for a short period of time. For free or maybe a little fee. Just to make travelling a little cheaper for the so poor student. These adresses could be published in the ELASA Newsletter or yearbook for example. So you can always apply this list if you have some off and some money to spend. As I thought it might be interesting to add a leaf in the ELASA Newsletter where people willing to take someone in, could write down their name and adress and send it to the Information Center.

A LETTER FROM VILNIUS

Dear Sir / Madame,

We, a Vilinus Art Academy student group, would like to ask your organisation's help in supporting the establishment of a symposium at the sculpture park called "Europe's Park". This initiative has the backing of the Vilinus Art Academy.

Lithuania contains the cultural centres of east and west Europe. Through out the ages, many nations have had cultural in roads through Lithuania. Some did not come by their own choosing, such as fleeing from calamity, wars, etc., others came by curiosity, and yet others with yearning heart. What did they find, hard to say; maybe sandy roads, a blue sky, or the glow of the sunset.

They all left their mark; a castle in ruins... a sign of unfaithfulness, or a holy painting hanging above the church alter... a sign of unity. There are no more contemporaries, who saw the guest artists perform their art, but just their mark remains. A mark, who displays universal and fundamental human treasures, left behind, for ages to come, to understand one another.

Not far from Vilinus is the geographical center of Europe. Just recently it was discovered, such is its fate - the return to Europe overnight. "Europe's Park" is an idea, which is to join the young artists of all Europe. A thought that rose from an inner desire to get to know the "other" world through art, friendship, exchanging cultural experiences, and we have a hope that we are of value, being here in Europe's centre.

"Europe's Park" we hope, can become an annual event for young artists to participate in art symposiums and seminars.

Not just an idea, but a reality.... several years ago, a park began to be constructed, not far from Europe's geographical centre. It's area covers five hectares of fields, and forests wilh a stream flowing through a rolling landscape. Among the oaks, maples and pine trees and on the fields, new cultural in roads are to be formed and left behind a mark for ages to come...

We would like to organize a small international sculpture symposium at "Europe's Park" of young artists of different art schools in Europe. The symposium will last three weeks and will occur in the summer (July, August '93). We plain to have nine participations in our symposium. The park has an art studio and living facilities for the participants. The program will enable the participant get to know Lithuania and it's traditions. There will be excursions to important historical and cultural places.

Our desire is that "Europe's Park" would have a harmonious relationship between art and nature. We think that it would be appropriale to use materials (such as boulders) that are naturally found in Lithuanian nature.

We would like to ask your organisalion to help support our symposium or recommend someone who can do so. We hope that this event will become a traditional one. We also are interested in your related activities and events, and would like to develop ties with you. We feel it is important to an aquatinted participant to Europe's culture and heritage.

We look forward to hearing from you and hoping that new ties will be made.

Sincerely yours
Gintaras Karosas
