First Part

Welcome

Syl Gootjes opens the meeting at 13:30. She welcomes everybody present, especially the representatives from the countries that haven't attended ELASA meetings before - Italy, Spain and Norway. Also special welcome to Mark Bazzel from USA, from LABASH.

Introduction

A few sentences about the history of ELASA.

Syl presents the schedule for this reps meeting.

News from the reps

A rep from each country tells a few things about what's going on at their school, about LA study and ELASA work in their country.

Austria

Stephan: They are thinking of shortening the study from 8-year program. There are fewer people interested in studying L.A., because of the cutting system, bad possibilities for employment,...

Bulgaria

Assen: More subjects are computer based. After the mini meeting they had, there is more interest for ELASA.
Emilia: Study is now five years long.

Croatia

Luka: A lot of problems, because the study for L.A. is just two years old. Co-operation with Slovenian professors. Lack of space.

Czech Republic

Jana: They are moving the faculty from Lednice closer to the centre - more money.

Denmark

Eva: Problem with getting professors, because the law inquires them to have a master degree. All the work - projects are done on computer.

France

Anouk: Also students form other studies (economy, English..) can study L.A.

Germany

Axel: Had a mini meeting, but still a problem with getting new students to join ELASA, although they have 17 schools for L.A. They are preparing for another meeting - LASKO, for German speaking countries.

Hungary

Johanna: Because of money problems they are probably attach them to another faculty (architecture and agronomy). They want to stay independent. Mini-meeting in October'98.

Ireland

Gary: Problem with getting people to ELASA (money problems and too little people finishing the study)

Netherlands

Nathasha: Combining study with work.
Kris: Problem with connecting both schools.

Norway

Lars: Only one school, the number of students is getting bigger.
Kristin: They had a Nordic meeting. Getting new professors.

Poland

Karolina: Want to free themselves from the belonging to agriculture. Summer camps can be joined.
Alexandra: They are loosing the professors.

Slovakia

Pavol: Not enough qualified professors. Co-operation with Czech.

Slovenia

Tina: Lack of space. New homepage created for the purposes of the meeting in Slovenia.

Spain

Luis: Two schools - Madrid and Barcelona.

Sweden

Karin: They can choose the courses among two schools for L.A. (closing one of them). Double the number of students. Had a mini-meeting. IAIS are having the meeting next year.

Switzerland

Ingo: Summer faculty with famous professors. Organising a mini-meeting in august'99.
Franziska: New Farington school.

United Kingdom

Claire: Six schools for L.A., but no good connections among them.

Yugoslavia

Katarina: New law - professors as workers.

USA

Mark: There are 60 - 70 schools for L.A.

Minutes from last year meeting

Contacts with other organisations

Nobody joined any meeting of IFLA, EFLA and ECLAS time and money problems.

After the discussion it was decided, that if somebody wants to join he/she of course can, but we will not appoint people to go there anymore. Everybody will be informed of where the meetings will be held at and when. Everybody agreed.

Netherlands info centre

Michel: It exists, but doesn't function well, because after having the conference, the organising team is exhausted and there is no motivation for working on.

New proposals for changing of ELASA structure

In spite of all the changes that were made last year, it did not work. So it was decided that the next organising country will take over the info centre, so you can get all the information there. Everybody agrees.
