The five Landscape Architecture universities/schools of the EMiLA program share one common philosophy: The importance of the design studio in educating landscape architects. The EMiLA network is a collection of the most excellent institutions in Europe, which follow this teaching approach.
A very high percentage of the ECTS is devoted to this type of learning which usually consists of a real-world task, common to those given in practice, which is tackled over one semester and combined with inputs from other fields within the discipline, e.g. plant ecology or landscape theory, or from beyond the discipline, e.g. urban design or sociology. This is a demanding but very effective way of teaching future practitioners, yet many schools in Europe do not follow this approach. Instead many universities/schools have strong traditions in agriculture and forestry and put more emphasis on the natural sciences in a traditional lecture/seminar setup.
Another quality of the consortium is the rich, specific cultural tradition in regard to landscape. The five countries have very different landscape cultures, which are not yet shared extensively enough. The intensity of EMiLA makes it possible to create a new blend of these traditions, which is absolutely necessary to deal with landscape from a European perspective.
EMiLA will be a 2 year, 4 semester Bologna Compliant programme. The first and last semesters will be studied at the home school/university; the second and third semester will be studied at two other institutions of the network, meaning that by the end of the programme, the student will have had experience of three of the participating Schools.
Two common modules will provide extra knowledge on European topics: EMiLA will offer an E-learning module about European planning cultures and processes and a Summerschool in between the two exchange semesters. At this Summerschool students and teachers of the network work together on contemporary landscape architectural projects of European relevance.
