Again, a highly diverse and colourful group of participants had found their way to Romanian mountain village Potoc. For challenging themselves in experimental art and architecture, they had come all the way from Germany, Great Britain, Kosovo, Malaysia, Romania, Spain, South Africa, and Ukraine. Centered around the old village school, the workshop programme combined artistic experiments (wild!) with hands-on project work: mosaic tiling, paper making, design studio. As the main work, however, the reconstruction of the roof was undertaken – an ambitious task which got done with the help of local craftsmen.

Parallel to the course, a children´s workshop was held for the local youngsters. Also, many guests showed up during the workshop for presenting lectures and performances – e.g. a fabulous Jazz concert. This year´s course took another step towards transforming Potoc´s old school house into a vibrant experimental laboratory. The works and results of the summerschool will be presented in public exhibitions and upcoming publications – to be announced soon!

The challenge for the year 2011 questions the threshold of classical landscape architecture, and addresses a topic that affects open space planning, urban design, architecture, and traffic planning issues alike. The competition should encourage the candidates to tackle the principles and potential prospects of urban landscape architecture. With the aid of bold images and controversial approaches, the treatment of the proposed space in Hamburg, Germany should trigger discussion in the professionals world.

The competition area in Hamburg city includes the Bille estuary in the upper harbour of the Elbe and the adjoining areas.

Those eligible to take part are students and young graduates (up to 39 years old) of landscape architecture. Interdisciplinary collaboration (town planning, architecture, traffic planning, sociology, art and literature, etc) is recommended. The task is suitable for semester work or as a study project. The competion language is English.

The Otto-Linne Prize aims to reward designs which foster a forward-looking attitude towards urban landscape architecture and which develop innovative ideas for the treatment of the particular space.

Registration and further information:

In order to participate in the competition it is necessary to register online at http://luchterhandt.de/verfahrensmanagement/2042/ until the 26 August 2011. Thanks to the innovative teaching structure based on modules of 50 hours and multiples thereof, it is possible to complete this training within eighteen months only. The planning laboratories, seminars and workshops organised in Milan as well as in other European regions, are led by interpreters of the most relevant international experiences. They deal with current issues in landscape architecture (environmental sustainability, renewable energy, public space, etc.), identified in collaboration with local and national administrations, in addition to prominent international bodies in charge of landscape protection and valorisation. After attendance of the second level university Masters (1500 hours of which 750 face-to-face, 60 Italian CFU credits/75 ECTS) or of the single modules, equivalent to those organised from 1983 in Catalonia, the UPC Foundation of Barcelona will award a title which is recognised by EFLA. For the current year, ACMA has activated scholarships for enrolments to the Masters and the Continuing Education Courses of the UPC Foundation.
