Trip to Arendal
The sunny Friday 27th of May
Twenty-three quite tired, but still surprisingly cheerful landscape architect students left Hove to get some new impressions from Arendal.
We first visited Eydehavn Gallery in the oldest part of town. At the gallery we had a look at the exhibition “WATER” – a colourful collection of children’s paintings.
The gallery was connected to a special old vault from the 17th century. Using slide-show Geir Olav Kuvaas (representing the Canal company), introduced Arendal in this room with a very special atmosphere.
Together with the landscapearchitect Michael Fuller Gee, he told us about the new plans for the city, the reconstruction of the old canal system in Arendal. This lecture started a very interesting discussion about Norwegian architecture.
Is the Norwegian architecture conservative? After lunch at Pollen seaside, Fuller Gee guided us, looking at different projects: Storebrand, Arendal graveyard, Arendal hospital, the Market place and the pedestrian street.
Afterwards he invited us to his home for ice-cream and coffee. It was really a nice place with view to the sea. The rest of the day we walked around by ourselves in the charming streets of Arendal.
