European Community Action Scheme for Mobility of University Students (ERASMUS)

ERASMUS is the EC commission’s special programme to stimulate universities to work together and exchange in order to recognize each others education and diploma.

One of the greatest humanists in Europe during the Renaissance period was the Dutch theologist, Erasmus Roterodamus (1466-1536). The Erasmus of today stands for European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, a programme established by the European Community to increase mobility among students and university teachers. EFTA countries may also join, but are not allowed to exchange students with one another within the ERASMUS programme. ERASMUS aims at improving the qualifications of the students, including their knowledge of foreign languages, and promoting the cultural understanding between the countries.

ERASMUS enables students to exchange parts of their normal study programme with suitable parts of a study programme at one of the 18 other schools for 3-12 months. An extension of the student’s normal time of study will not be funded by ERASMUS. Each student gets a monthly grant from their national ERASMUS office to cover the extra living costs, plus the actual costs of language training, either at home or in the host country. The schools must guarantee accomodation for ERASMUS students, e.g. in a student home.

In the ERASMUS programme there is a network called ICP, i.e. Inter-University Cooperation Programme. The LANDSCAPE & PLANNING STUDIES NETWORK ICP 93 UK 2081/02 is a part of the ICP network. In the academic year 1994/95, there are 19 participating institutions wich represents 12 countries.
