ELASA 2011 summer
annual-meeting: Germany

annual meeting: Norway 1994

American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)

In the United States there is no independant LA-student association. The students are organised within the professional association. Currently there are sixty student chapters being part of the ASLA. Such a student chapter can be formed at any accredited university or educational institution that grants a degree in Landscape Architecture. The goal of the student chapters is to undertake activities that advance the education and skill of the art of Landscape Architecture.

As mentionned before, the student organization is at the moment part of the professional society, but the students in the USA are in the process of becoming an independent organization.

The presidents of the sixty student chapters meet twice a year. At these meetings issues and topics concerning students are discussed that pertain to the functioning and existence of each university department and organization. Each year, the student chapters elect a National Student Representative who is their contact person with the professionals and with other organization abroad.

In 1992, at the ELASA meeting in Rapperswil, Switzerland, the American Student Representative has been invited. He undertook the long journey and took part in the whole ELASA meeting. It was very intersting for both sides to get in contact with each other and profit from the different experiances. It was agreed that ELASA and the Student Representative from ASLA would keep an informal contact.
