Representative Meeting – Report
ELASA ’94
5TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, 21-28 MAY
Report from EFLA by Simon & Arjan
EFLA is working to make a standard for education in Europe, so it would be possible to change university during the course. At least four years of studies, and two years of working experience is required. They are also working with technical standards for landscape architects, so it would be possible to work all over Europe.
IFLA by Ive
The IFLA-congress will there in Mexico City 3-5 june this year. Last year the congress was not arranged, and hasn`t been an ELASA representative since South Korea in 1992. They have started to work with IALAS (International Assosiation for Landscape Architect Students).
ECLAS by Nicole
ECLAS is an organisation for the universities, and are working towards an improvement of education. The meeting was held in Malmø in Sweden, and the theme was how to teach landscape design and planning. ELASA is invited to be an observer at the meeting, with two representatives. ECLA’s next meeting will be in Edinbourgh, Scotland, in August 1994.
Other contacts
Simon has tried to contact EASA, (European Architect Student Assosiation), and had some response. There may be some oppertunity for future co-operation.
ELASA-Fund
Arjan and Abe have tried to get money from TEMPUS and ERASMUS for an ELASA-Fund to run the Info-center, but has been difficult to make contact.
TEMPUS: Need an agreement for each member country of ELASA.
ERASMUS: ELASA do not get any money, but they have not yet given a reason why.
Summerjobs
Last year it was decided that the representatives should collect adresses of LA- offices where it would be possible for foreign students to get a job. From the representatives there have been little response to this. It was felt that the Reps shall arrange their own arrangements.
Holiday exchanges
A questionaire will be produced for the use of the Reps to record details of accomodations availiable to visiting students.
Yearbook
A yearbook will be published later this year. We hope sometime in November. It will contain:
- General intro. of ELASA
- Constitution
- Conference report from Norway
- Exhibition report
- Rep. list
- Economic survey
- A map of Europe with the ELASA universities pointed out.
A dead-line for info. to the yearbook is set for the end of August. It will be sent to:
- The reps
- The universities
- The library on each university
- The prof. organisation
- Some magazines
Newsletters
Newsletters will be published 3 times next year.

Conference subsidy
It’s important that as many countries as possible are represented at ELASA-meetings. There is a list where the countries are divided into three sections for how much they have to pay. This is a flexible system that can be updated every year. The main reason is the economical situation of the country, but the travel distance may also count.

EFLA has made an informal proposal for permanent address at their office in Brussels.
Lithuania
Lithuanias LA is in a difficult situation. All the professors are architects, and think that architects are as good as LA on landscape. It is hard to get a job for LAs because of the difficult economical situation in Lithuania. Nobody seek LA-education, and the LA-department will be closed.
Old ELASA
The intention with this organisation is to keep in contact after finished studies. It can be useful for oppertunities for business and working together all over Europe. Old ELASA can also help ELASA in the future. Simon will be the contact person, and he will contact people who has already left ELASA. Contact will remain through letters, list of addresses and maybe meetings.

ECLAS- Nicole from Sweden (continue) and Liz from UK, with Dimitri as an observer.
Contact Group
The Ed group has changed it’s name to the Contact group. This group is the “hard core” of ELASA, and will contain EFLA – IFLA – and ECLAS reps, the “investigaters” and others that are interested. Arjan is the contact person and he will send the information to the group members. A telephone-tree has been made and will be published to the group members.
Guidelines
Some small changes has been made with proposal made by Abe and Andi. A final proposal will be published in the Yearbook.
Mini-Meetings
Every country who wants to, can arrange small, lowprice meetings during the year. A minimum time limit on three months to advertise the meeting in the newsletter are recommended. A standard info. list for what mini meetings should contain, and standard check list how to arrange minimeetings will be made by John. This lists, and a list of issues will be published in the first newsletter.
Next ELASA Conference
The UK will arrange next years conferense in Cheltenham & Gloucester. Sometime during the spring of 1995 the meeting will take place.
