A LETTER FROM VILNIUS
Dear Sir / Madame,
We, a Vilinus Art Academy student group, would like to ask your organisation’s help in supporting the establishment of a symposium at the sculpture park called “Europe’s Park”. This initiative has the backing of the Vilinus Art Academy.
Lithuania contains the cultural centres of east and west Europe. Through out the ages, many nations have had cultural in roads through Lithuania. Some did not come by their own choosing, such as fleeing from calamity, wars, etc., others came by curiosity, and yet others with yearning heart. What did they find, hard to say; maybe sandy roads, a blue sky, or the glow of the sunset.
They all left their mark; a castle in ruins… a sign of unfaithfulness, or a holy painting hanging above the church alter… a sign of unity. There are no more contemporaries, who saw the guest artists perform their art, but just their mark remains. A mark, who displays universal and fundamental human treasures, left behind, for ages to come, to understand one another.
Not far from Vilinus is the geographical center of Europe. Just recently it was discovered, such is its fate – the return to Europe overnight. “Europe’s Park” is an idea, which is to join the young artists of all Europe. A thought that rose from an inner desire to get to know the “other” world through art, friendship, exchanging cultural experiences, and we have a hope that we are of value, being here in Europe’s centre.
“Europe’s Park” we hope, can become an annual event for young artists to participate in art symposiums and seminars.
Not just an idea, but a reality…. several years ago, a park began to be constructed, not far from Europe’s geographical centre. It’s area covers five hectares of fields, and forests wilh a stream flowing through a rolling landscape. Among the oaks, maples and pine trees and on the fields, new cultural in roads are to be formed and left behind a mark for ages to come…
We would like to organize a small international sculpture symposium at “Europe’s Park” of young artists of different art schools in Europe. The symposium will last three weeks and will occur in the summer (July, August ’93). We plain to have nine participations in our symposium. The park has an art studio and living facilities for the participants. The program will enable the participant get to know Lithuania and it’s traditions. There will be excursions to important historical and cultural places.
Our desire is that “Europe’s Park” would have a harmonious relationship between art and nature. We think that it would be appropriale to use materials (such as boulders) that are naturally found in Lithuanian nature.
We would like to ask your organisalion to help support our symposium or recommend someone who can do so. We hope that this event will become a traditional one. We also are interested in your related activities and events, and would like to develop ties with you. We feel it is important to an aquatinted participant to Europe’s culture and heritage.
We look forward to hearing from you and hoping that new ties will be made.
Sincerely yours
